Our parish needs your financial support…parish contributions are down but our parish and school expenses have not changed.  This fiscal year we have already had to cash in two certificates of deposit to pay parish and school expenses.  Our parish has run in the “red” for 2 years now and the reserves are diminishing.  We have tried to economize as much as possible, but we cannot survive without your financial support.

Pastoral Column
On Sunday, May 18, Fr. Dick Fleischman will celebrate his 40th anniversary to the priesthood. That is almost as long as I’ve been alive! A lot happens in forty years. Forty years of presiding over eucharist, baptisms, confirmations, marriages, anointing the sick and funerals. Forty years of visiting hospitals. Forty years of preaching. Forty years of parish meetings. Forty years of prayer. Forty years of caring for God’s people.

When Fr. Dick entered the seminary, it is likely he and his fellow seminarians weren’t sure what changes were on the horizon in the Church. Fr. Dick began his education to become a priest prior to Vatican II when Masses were still celebrated in Latin and the priest faced away from the people. He was ordained in 1968...just a few years after Vatican II which brought so many changes to the Church: Masses in the native language, the priest facing the people, no more communion rails, communion under both species, etc.

I’m certain that there has been much blessing in Fr. Dick’s ministry, both in his ministry to (and friendship with) others and in others’ ministry to (and friendship with) him. I’m also certain that there has been difficult times as well. One doesn’t make a 40-year commitment to anything without some trials along the way. I’m sure any of you married couples who have hit the 40-year mark can relate to that!

What an accomplishment! What an event to celebrate!

Our tri-parish community will honor Fr. Dick’s 40 years of ordained ministry with one combined reception on Sunday, May 18, following the 9:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross chapel. All are invited to share in the celebration and show their appreciation for Fr. Dick’s ministry. Hospitality will be provided with desserts and punch. If you are willing and able to provide a dessert and/or help host the reception, please contact me. Also, there will be an opportunity for folks to share their favorite memories of Fr. Dick.

If you are unable to join us, please take a moment in the coming days and weeks to thank him for his dedication to ordained ministry.

May God continue to bless him as he continues to minister to us and the larger Church.

Deb Hamm, Pastoral Associate
