More Than AcademicsOur Lady of the Lakes School, in cooperation with the Random Lake Public School, provides a band program. Students may participate in the band program beginning in sixth grade, and they have the opportunity to receive band instruction every other day.
As a way to give our students public speaking experience, we offer the fifth and sixth grade students an opportunity to compete in speech contests. Every other year we participate in the Sheboygan Catholic Schools Speech Contest. During the opposite years, they may participate in the District 9 Forensics Contest. Also, every year the fifth and sixth grade students compete in the local level of the National Spelling Bee.
Our Lady of the Lakes has an Athletic Director, and the school participates in the Sheboygan County Parochial Basketball League. At present we field both boys and girls teams, comprised of fifth and sixth grade students.
Developing a sense of service is an important aspect of a Catholic Education. Some examples of ways that Our Lady of the Lakes students provide service are by collecting items for the Random Lake Food Pantry, becoming Mass servers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, providing decorations at holidays to two local senior citizens homes, and writing to those in the armed services, among other things.
Field trips are planned to give children the opportunity to observe community life and to experience other educational opportunities. Faculty members plan and schedule these trips to coincide with their teaching programs.
A unique program we have at Our Lady of the Lakes School is our Buddy Program. The students are matched up as follows: Kindergarten with 6th graders, 4-year-olds with 5th graders, and 3-year-olds with 4th graders. Throughout the year, the older students work with their buddies on reading, sitting with them during Mass, and helping out with various special activities. It gives the older students an opportunity to learn mentoring skills while building relationships with younger children at the school.
Our Lady of the Lakes provides a hot lunch program and bussing to the school. Both of these programs are provided through the cooperation of the School District of Random Lake.
Parents are very active in our school as well as grandparents and community members. Parents are welcome to visit the classroom, and each Thursday correspondence is sent home with students, including upcoming activities and any pertinent information the parents need to know.
Through the hard work and fundraising activities sponsored by the Home & School Association, the children of our school are provided with many different opportunities and have additional items for the school.
